HIST 258, HIST 256 |
When Europeans first came to the Americas, they perceived and interpreted the novelties of these new spaces through the lens of their study of Greece and Rome. Classical education in the New World also influenced indigenous, mestizo and Creole authors who recast their histories and composed works through the imitation of ancient models. By critically examining colonial and Indigenous sources together with relevant texts by ancient Greeks and Romans, this course will offer a general introduction to the impact and transformations of the classical tradition in the early Americas. The class will be organized by case studies: we will read prose histories by Italian humanists and mestizo intellectuals; epic poetry by Guatemalan Jesuits; petitions written by Indigenous authors in both Mexico and the Massachusetts Bay Colony; philosophical debates about Indigenous societies conducted by Dominican theologians and Aristotelian scholars; and Creole calls for national independences in North and South America. This course will fulfill the History, Politics, and Social Justice requirement and the Literature and Performance Requirement for the Classical Studies major. |
