This course considers the place of media -- print, radio, television, and the internet -- in the history of American religion. How do various media mediate religious traditions? How do religious actors use media to communicate religious messages and fulfill religious purposes? The course will begin with the place of the written word in the development of early American Christianity, especially evangelicalism. It will consider the use of radio shows and televangelism in shaping twentieth century religions. It will examine the role of the religious marketplace in creating dominant American culture and various subcultures. Finally, the course will discuss the changes in the twenty-first century religious landscape that accompanied the rise of the internet and new media: the proliferation of digital religious communities, the rising numbers of the religiously unaffiliated, and the lack of trust in religious institutions. |
