Public speaking is a crucially important skill for a functioning democracy. The ability to frame an argument, marshal evidence, and compellingly defend one's position is paramount to communicating with those of differing views. The critical capacity to analyze public speeches both for what they say and do not say is just as critical to a citizenry armed against mis- and disinformation. Developing these skills and this capacity for rhetorical and discourse analysis are at the heart of this course, focused on developing in students the tools to shape the world around them and attend keenly to the moves political and public speeches make. Each section of the course will be dedicated to preparing for and practicing different forms of public speaking, including presentations, speeches, debates, and more. |
