Solidarity and Political Desire: Issues in Queer and Trans Studies
FGSS 238

This course will consider where the field of trans studies intersects (sometimes frictionally) with queer studies. Students will encounter introductory readings in order to parse where trans studies and queer studies converge and/or diverge in their approaches to the critique of (hetero)normativity and the theorization of political desire. Over the course of the semester, students will gradually engage with more specialized topics to flesh out an intramural sense of the rich and complex debates surrounding the overlap between both fields. Where divergences exist, there will be some questions to consider: how are divergent differences negotiated in public sphere(s)? How do queer and trans scholars and activists theorize and practice solidarity? Along the way, we will also consider how other categories of difference (race, class, ethnicity, nationality) recast these questions. For example, how does Black trans studies pose the question/problem of solidarity? How do scholars from the Global South challenge and revise the dominant framings of gender non-conformity in the Global North? The goal of this class will be to establish a strong scholarly basis for discussing the state of queer/trans studies in the present. |
