ENGL 251
Spring 2027

Frankenstein¿s monster learns about humankind by reading John Milton¿s Paradise Lost. Should we? This course takes up Milton¿s epic poem and Shelley¿s shocking novel to discover how they tangle with one another in their stories of creation. What should we do with our desire to know more, sometimes more than we should? What is unteachable? What can we learn? With some help from other poets, we¿ll also explore the relationship between humans and the natural world. From cultivated labor in Eden to the wilds of the Swiss alps, we come to understand both Adam and Eve, Frankenstein and the Creature, against the natural backgrounds that are characters in their own right. |
