Outer space is a place of growing environmental, economic, and military concern. In this class we will explore the politics of space exploration over the past century. Outer space is pivotal for satellite communications. Corporations and governments are eying space as the next site of resource extraction. The colonization of outer space is becoming closer to reality and further from science fiction every day. We will explore the contemporary geopolitics of outer space as well as the origins of astropolitics within the 20th century history of decolonization and the Global Cold War. We will debate questions such as: Should there be nuclear weapons in space? Should corporations colonize Mars or mine asteroids? Who governs the area beyond the Kármán line? We will read readings from critical indigenous studies, feminist STS, critical legal studies, social and cultural history.¿ |
