This course examines how faith traditions inform civic life, strengthen community networks, and influence movements for social change. Students study religious and philosophical frameworks that shape public leadership, explore case studies of community organizing rooted in moral conviction, and consider how faith-based and secular actors work together to address shared challenges. It will be distinct from current collaborative courses offered by the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life and CSPL. It uses Middletown and Connecticut as central learning sites to examine how values-driven leadership contributes to local decision-making and collective well-being. We would like the course to be exempt from a national search and offered to Reverend Dr. Philippe E.C. Andal. Andal has prior collegiate teaching experience at Yale Divinity School. He currently serves as co-Director of CONECT; a collective of churches, synagogues, mosques, temples, and civic organizations from across the state who join together to take action on social and economic issues of mutual concern. The course will include relevant guest speakers and community based engagements with groups such as the Middletown Racial Justice Coalition. Allbritton/JCCP will be entering an historic partnership with MRJC in 2026 to deliver more holistic programming for residents of the Traverse Square and Maplewood housing communities. This will create greater opportunities for Wes students and community partners grounded in enhancing civic action. |
