Textiles and Architecture in the Islamic World
ARHA 297
Spring 2027
| Section:

|
This course examines the close relationship between textiles and architecture in the historic Islamic world. Key questions for investigation include: how did textiles shape experiences of architecture, alongside other sensorial interventions, and what methods exist for studying such experiences in cases where materials no longer survive in situ? In what ways did textiles serve as models for architectural ornament, and conversely, how did architecture inspire the design of textiles? Does the architecture of the modern museum alter visitors' understanding of these fabrics today? This course will also explore issues of historiography, examining how "textile architecture" informed the formation of the field of Islamic art and factored into Orientalist discourses on "the nomad's tent" and "the Oriental carpet." Finally, we will engage closely with the materiality of both textiles and architecture through hands-on sessions and other activities. |
