Market Design
ECON 312
Spring 2027
| Section:
01
|
In many instances, it seems inefficient or even unethical to allow for a decentralized market to handle the allocation of a good or commodity. For example, allowing individuals to buy and sell human organs on an open market raises a number of deeply concerning questions about whether this would lead to immoral behavior. In cases like this organ exchange, as well as in cases where the failure of a market could lead to disastrous outcomes (e.g., electricity), the rules of the market must be carefully designed and the operation must be monitored. Indeed, many such markets operate under some centralized mediator that writes and enforces rules that guarantee the safe and smooth functioning of it. This course will study the design and operation of such marketplaces. |
