Epic Theater: Mother Brecht and his Children
THEA 343
Spring 2027
Section: 01

One of the few theatre practitioners whose name has become an adjective, Bertolt Brecht¿s influence on theatre in the 20th and 21st centuries can hardly be overstated. His methods of presentation are also largely only superficially understood. In this class we will study Brecht¿s plays, his theoretical writings, and directing methods, as well as the many theatre artists and filmmakers who have incorporated, consciously or not, his ideas and techniques into their work. We will also look at influences on Brecht, including the Elizabethan Theatre of Shakespeare¿s time and the Classical Chinese Theater.
