Alone Together: Dwelling in Community
ARST 231

Alone Together provides an introduction to architectural thinking and practice through the examination of its most essential subject: the dwelling. How do the spaces we call home shape the way we live? The course encourages students to interrogate how we live as individuals and how we live together in community. Contemporary modes of dwelling leave little room for the endless variety of human living arrangements, relationships, and economic circumstances. Distilling dwelling to its fundamental spaces and functions, each student will consider what should be reserved for the individual and what is best held in common. The studio begins with an autobiographical study of the spaces students inhabit by way of measured drawings and models. Close readings of key precedent projects and critical texts situate this study in the larger context of architectural history and theory. The studio culminates with each student crafting their own manifesto on dwelling and community that proposes how we might live better, then developing a design that gives these ideas spatial form. No prior experience required. |
