New Ideas, Old Patterns: Examining Innovation and Inequality in NYC Schools, 1897-present.
EDST 348
Spring 2027
Section: 01

According to some, nothing has changed in American high schools for at least a century. According to others, the only constant factor in US education is change, whether profound or superficial. This course introduces students to waves of educational innovation in New York City schools from 1897 (when the City of New York consolidated across the five boroughs and formed the US¿s largest school system) to the present (as the city remains both a leading exemplar in US education policy and a site of stark and enduring inequality). We ask where innovative ideas in schooling came from, how they intersected with school system policy and practice, with what consequences. We pay particular attention to the experiences of Black New Yorkers as teachers, parents, and students in a historically unequal system. We consider how innovation, maintenance, and survival relate to one another in the operation of the institution of school, and evaluate who benefits from each of these arrangements.
