This course will utilize a historical survey of milestones in the science of genetics that have brought us to a current era where genetics is involved in all aspects of our lives. In addition to learning the principles of genetics and the methods of analysis (classical and molecular), students will have an opportunity to discuss issues that genetics raises in ethics, politics, and economics. However, these issues are not the primary focus of the course.
Ethical Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning
Genetic analysis utilizes mathematical and statistical methods. The course includes several opportunities for discussion in which students read and discuss the ethical issues associated with several areas of genetics.

THIS COURSE IS NOT OPEN TO STUDENTS WHO HAVE TAKEN AP BIOLOGY OR ANOTHER ADVANCED LEVEL BIOLOGY COURSE IN HIGH SCHOOL OR ARE ENROLLED IN (OR HAVE TAKEN) AN INTRODUCTORY SCIENCE COURSE. A student should have completed one year of high school chemistry and one year of high school biology. The course may not be used to satisfy any requirements of the Biology, MB&B or NS&B majors.
