In this advanced seminar, we consider how genetic and environmental factors interact to shape the development and behavior of organisms, including humans. After an initial series of lectures and discussions on foundational readings, the class will consist of in-depth student presentations and class discussion.

Classic papers on gene/environment interaction by R.C. Lewontin, H.F. Nijhout, and philosopher Russell Gray; data papers from the current biological and medical literature on topics of students' choice.

Major oral presentation based on individual library research and accompanying written assignment; brief written responses to assigned readings each week.

The prerequisite is any one course beyond Intro Biology (BIOL 181/182) in either development, behavior, genetics or evolution (e.g., BIOL 210 or BIOL 214 or BIOL 218 or BIOL 224). Students who have not taken these specific courses but who have other relevant background (such as PSYCH or SISP courses) should contact Professor Sultan to request a pre-req override.
