The Middle East in the 20th Century

This course surveys the history, culture, and religion of the contemporary Middle East. Emphasis is on the historical roots of current problems. These include the Arab-Israeli conflict, Westernization versus Islam, U.S. involvement in the region, the Sunni-Shia divide within Islam. Finally, the course will address the causes of the Arab Spring and discuss possible outcomes of the ongoing turmoil that reform movements unleashed.
