20th-Century United States History

HIST 240
Fall 2015
Section: 01
Crosslisting: AMST 230
Certificates: Civic Engagement, The Study of Education

This course will explore the history of the United States from 1901 until recent times. It will encompass many aspects of modern American history including the economy, social relations, art, popular culture, intellectual life, politics, and war. The unifying theme will be the emergence of modern liberalism during the Progressive Era and its dominance in American politics and thought by the mid-20th century. Throughout that era, however, there was an active minority hostile to liberalism that began to organize in the 1950s and proved quite successful in the later 20th and early 21st centuries.
