This course is the first half of a two-semester intermediate sequence and it seeks to increase students' confidence and ability to read, write, speak, and understand the language, as it builds on previously learned grammatical structures and introduces more complex ones. Authentic artifacts such as literary excerpts, films, newspaper articles, and songs constitute the starting points (spunti) of this course. Each spunto helps students develop an understanding of culture and society in contemporary Italy, offers opportunities to explore similarities and differences between the students' native culture and Italian culture and society, and provides varied activities for the improvement of linguistic competence. Class is conducted entirely in Italian. |

Examinations and Assignments: Bi-weekly exams; weekly written and oral assignments; weekly reading, grammar and audio activities in grammar manual and course pack; final project. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: Only placement test scores from the current semester are acceptable. ITAL 111 is intended for students who have completed ITAL 102 with a B- or better. Students who do not meet these criteria should consult with the language coordinator before pre-registering. Provisions may be made for students going to Italy for what would be their fourth semester. Credit will be given for continuing work done overseas upon successful completion of the placement exam upon return. Students placed in ITAL 112 are strongly encouraged to enroll in ITAL 111 in the Fall Semester. The class meets MWF with instructor and once with course assistant (either Tue. or Thur.) for drill and conversation (esercitazione). Days and times for CA sessions will be announced first week of class. If the student is unable to attend the esercitazione, s/he will be unable to enroll in the course. |
