Introduction to Hispanic Literature and Advanced Practice in Spanish|
Poems, plays, essays, and short stories representative of various Spanish-speaking countries and different periods of literary history are used to stimulate conversation, improve writing skills, and introduce students to the fundamentals of literary analysis. The course is given exclusively in Spanish. Some laboratory work may be assigned. Besides the three hours of class sessions with the professor, all students are required to attend a weekly one-hour conversation section. SPAN221 is considered a gateway to the Spanish major. It is designed to prepare students who have completed two years of college-level Spanish for advanced-level reading courses or for study abroad.
Speaking is emphasized in Spanish 221 through weekly conversation sessions and participation in class discussion. Writing is also emphasized through a series of essays that are submitted with the possibility of revision. Students, in the process of producing these essays, learn not only about interpreting texts through close reading but also about the mechanics of expository writing, grammar, style, and argumentation.
