Stories by Octavia Butler, Italo Calvino, Anton Chekhov, Julio Cortázar, Lydia Davis, Linh Dinh, Langston Hughes, James Joyce, Franz Kafka, Jamaica Kincaid, Lorrie Moore, Alice Munro, Edna O'Brien, Ovid, Grace Paley, and others.

Examinations and Assignments: Six short exercises in various elements of fiction, two short stories, one revision, and regular entries in a writing journal. Attendance at every class required. There is a workshop component to this course so participating in class discussions is essential. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments: May not be taken in addition to another introductory fiction-writing course. May not be taken in the same semester as another writing course.
Students who might wish to write an honors thesis in English are advised to take this course for a letter grade. The prerequisite to writing an honors thesis is an A- average for all English classes and the prerequisite for a creative honors thesis, additionally, is a A in two writing courses. |
