Democratization, Modernization, and the Spanish Woman Writer: 1970-2000
SPAN 249
Spring 2007
Section: 01
Crosslisting: FGSS 249, COL 259

The emergence of the feminine voice in literature is one of the key signs of the democratization that Spanish culture has undergone during the last few decades of the 20th century. We will seek to gain a better understanding of this process by studying a selection of the best known narratives written by Spanish women between 1970 and 2000. In doing so, we will focus especially on such matters as the narratological strategies adopted by women writers and the socio-political context as it relates to female literary production in Spain. We will also explore the historical origins of Spanish feminism, comparing and contrasting it to North-American feminism.
