This course offers an introduction to the cultural production of African Americans from the mid-18th century to the present, with an emphasis on poetry and fiction. Beginning with slave narratives and early poetry, we will consider issues of genre, literary traditions, and historical context while gaining experience in reading and analyzing literary texts. |

Readings from representative writers, including Wheatley, Horton, Whitfield, Harper, Walker, Stewart, Garnet, Douglass, Cooper, DuBois, Hopkins, Dunbar, Wells, Chesnutt, Johnson, Wright, Ellison, Baldwin, Petry, Brooks, and Hayden, as well the writers associated with the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement, and the contemporary African American Renaissance.

Two five-page papers, a midterm and final examination. |

Students are expected to attend class and have assignments completed on the day they appear on the syllabus. This course meets the English Department's Literature of Difference requirement for the English major. |
