Memory and Identity in Contemporary Chinese Fiction & Film

The course will offer an overview of major fiction writers and film directors in the contemporary PRC, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The genres of Chinese film that it will examine include Hong Kong action film, fifth-generation mainland cinema, and Taiwanese urban dramas. We will look at these literary and visual texts in light of a number of topics such as violence, fantasy and the martial-arts genre, traumatic memory and aesthetic representation of cultural and political upheaval, and the issue of gender, sexuality and identity in the age of globalization.
