Constructing the Other in Jewish and Christian Scriptures
RELI 245
Fall 2006
Section: 01

In telling its story the Bible creates an image of the "Other", the
outsider who opposes the people of God, whether it is the Canaanites in the
Hebrew Bible or the Jews in the New Testament. Yet in both cases the
construction of the Other is much more varied and complex than at first
appears, and also functions as a mirror to construct notions of the
insiders' community. Corresponding to this construction of the external
Other is also a construction of internal Others based on race, class,
gender, and ability. Various theoretical approaches are introduced to
illuminate this process.
