Imperial Encounters
HIST 383
Fall 2006
Section: 01
Crosslisting: ANTH 382

In this course we will investigate close encounters between individuals and their cultures in the 'contact zones' created by imperialism in order to understand, at the level of interpersonal interaction, how power has been exercised or resisted and identity affirmed or transformed under the conditions of empire. Our examples will be taken from the Asia-Pacific region and will involve reading literary texts as well as historical case studies.
