This workshop, for students with prior interest in and understanding of creative nonfiction, will focus on the act of reading. In both your essays and the assigned texts we will consider what the experience of reading and questions of style, both of which are often seen as private, have to do with arenas such as power, violence, and history, often seen as public. |

Readings include work by Sybille Bedford, Susan Sontag, Nicholson Baker, Hilton Als, Virginia Woolf, Jamaica Kincaid, Marcel Proust and others, as well as students' essays.

Examinations and Assignments:
Several short essays, one long essay, two revisions, and a portfolio of all written work at the end of the semester. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This course is a workshop: Attendance at and participation in every class are required.
To apply to this course, please submit 5 double-spaced pages of prose (preferably creative nonfiction). Please also submit a cover page in two parts: 1) your name, email address, year in school, major, some of your favorite writers and any other influences, and 2) a short biographical statement (a paragraph) describing your history with and interest in nonfiction writing. Submissions (hard copies, not emails or faxes) are due by November 13 at noon to the Secretary, Department of English, 294 High Street. You may not take this course and another writing course concurrently, with the exception of a senior thesis tutorial. |
