This seminar-style course offers students with prior experience writing creative nonfiction a chance to develop new work and discuss intensively a range of twentieth-century and contemporary nonfiction. Class meetings will focus on the constructive analysis of essays submitted by members of the workshop, of this published work, and of the ethical and theoretical issues raised by this genre. Assignments will include several essays, a number of revisions, and short response papers on the readings. A portfolio of work completed during the semester is due at the final class meeting. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This course is a workshop: Attendance at and participation in every class are required. Students are also required to attend 3 readings by visiting writers (usually scheduled on Wednesday nights) during the semester.
To apply to this course, please submit 5 double-spaced pages of prose (preferably creative nonfiction). Please also submit a cover page in two sections: 1) your name, email address, year in school, major (if any), some of your favorite writers and any other influences, and 2) a short biographical statement (a paragraph) describing your history with and interest in nonfiction writing. There will be two deadlines for submission of materials, one during spring pre-registration and the other in August. Spring submissions (hard copies, not emails or faxes) are due by April 15, 2009 at 4 p.m. to Liz Tinker, Department of English, 294 High Street. If you are applying for the course in August, please submit your materials electronically in a single attachment to lcohen01@wesleyan.edu no later than 10 a.m. on Friday, September 4, 2009. Please use either Microsoft word or rich-text-format for your attachment. You will be notified electronically if you have been admitted (or not) to the course. You may not take this course and another writing course concurrently, with the exception of a senior thesis tutorial. |
