This readings seminar explores the origins of the British Empire, beginning with Tudor conquest of Ireland and ending with Kenya's Mau Mau Rebellion in the 1950s. After the American Revolution, Britain would go on to control two fifths of the globe; the resulting empire would create as well as destroy, and generate some of the fiercest debates in world history. What was the purpose of colonization? Who administered the Empire? Was the Empire always brutal? How did Britons make sense of imperial expansion? In what ways did colonized peoples accommodate or resist colonization? This course takes an episodic approach to British imperial history, and introduces students to a range of methodological concerns. Students will read and discuss secondary works as well as primary sources. |
