Collecting Native America: Cultural and Literary Perspectives
AMST 199
Spring 2009
| Section:
01
|
This is a Junior Colloquium. In this course we will explore Native American studies through the lenses of material culture and the politics of collecting. Utilizing cultural and literary perspectives (from predominantly native scholars and authors) we will address not only the history and impact of, but also native resistance to colonialism. |
Essential Capabilities:
Interpretation, Writing Writing: In addition to short critical response writings, there will be one major research project for this course. For their research project students will write and receive constructive feedback on proposals, initial outlines and bibliographies, and successive paper drafts.
Interpretation: Students will be taught critical interpretative skills, as they relate to the study of Native American material culture. Students will learn how to critically interpret the movement of material culture as it travels between different culturally, historically, and politically situated sites (i.e. indigenous contexts/uses, art museums, scientific collections, anthropology museums, the Western art market, tourist economies, repatriation proceedings, and indigenous museums/cultural centers).
