This course will examine the origins, preferences, and organization of both non-violent and violent Islamist groups, with a particular focus on the Middle East and Central Asia. Students will be exposed to case-specific material, doctrines of political Islam in translation, and broader theories of social movements and state-society relations from the field of comparative politics.

Intercultural Literacy. Islamist social movements have generated substantial political, social, and cultural friction within and without the Middle East region. Through an in-depth study of history, intellectual thought, and theory, this course will encourage students to question individual and collective perceptions of political Islam.

Writing. This is a writing intensive course that will require students to conduct research, develop original arguments and criticism, and articulate complex ideas and historical information on paper. The course will include a number of short writing assignments and a long paper.
