Course Cluster and Certificates: Writing Certificate
This course provides an introduction to the art and craft of writing for theater. In the course of the semester, students will create plot and characters, as well as compose, organize, and revise a one-act play for the final stage reading. The course will help students develop an artistic voice by completing additional playwriting exercises, as well as reading and discussing classic and contemporary plays. The instructor and students' peers will provide oral and written feedback in workshop sessions.

Students will be assigned at least one play to read each week. The assigned texts offer examples of various dramatic structures and theatrical techniques that can shape a play. Writing exercises will often be based on the reading.
Examinations and Assignments:
Short weekly writing assignments are designed to ignite a creative vision and develop the playwrights' voice. Students will be assigned specific workshop sessions where longer pieces will be read aloud and discussed by their peers. For the final project, each playwright will write, through a series of submissions and revisions, a one-act play of at least 20 pages and stage an excerpt from this piece.
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
Contributes to fulfillment of ENGL major requirements:
Class of 22: Techniques or Special Topic course or genre-focused course in the CW concentration, Theory and Literary Forms concentration, elective.
Class of 23 and beyond: CW requirement, CW path course (but not 300-level course or upper-level workshop), elective.
The English department highly recommends that students be enrolled in only one CW course in a semester. If you are admitted to more than one CW course, the department requests that you choose one and let the instructors know during Adjustment Period. By doing so you will be considerate of instructors and other students.
