Certificates: Writing

This is the capstone course of the Writing Certificate Program. The course offers an opportunity to work closely with other students completing the Writing Certificate and to receive advice from professional writers and editors about editing and compiling work for publication: This spring, the course is taught by Molly Bruce Barton, Global Digital Director at Penguin/Random House, and focuses on the recent history and evolution of book publishing in America. What does it mean to write professionally in this digital age of free content?
Readings will include works such as Merchants of Cultures by John Thompson, Book Was There: Reading in Electronic Times by Andrew Piper, Gutenberg Elegies by Sven Birkerts, The Content Machine by Michael Bhaskar, Virginia Quarterly Review's 'What is the Business of Literature?' By Richard Nash former publisher of Softskull Books, and Book Forum's 'Data Mined' by Choire Sicha, publisher of The Awl. Assignments include several short pieces of fiction or non-fiction and a longer project that involves giving and receiving feedback and investigating new publishing venues like Byliner, The Atavist, Medium and smaller new publishers like Two Dollar Radio.
