Probably the first literature we fall in love with, children's literature shapes individuals and cultures in profound ways, investing us with important mythologies and guiding our identities and behaviors. This course will examine fairy tales, some works from the "golden age" of children's stories, and some contemporary works. We will enrich our reading of the fiction with some of the central theorists of this genre, including Bruno Bettelheim, Jack Zipes, and Maria Tatar. |

Essential Capabilities:
Ethical Reasoning, Interpretation
Children's literature is intimately concerned with socializing the child into acceptable modes of behavior, feeling, and identity. Thus, much of our concern will be to understand the means whereby this literature inculcates ethical standards.
We will be analyzing the underlying subtexts of the narratives, encoded within plot and character.

Major Readings: Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore
Readings will include, among others, classic fairy tales and revisions by various authors, J.M. Barrie's PETER PAN, Louisa May Alcott's LITTLE WOMEN, and Kenneth Grahame's THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS. We will also read various critics, including Bruno Bettelheim, Jack Zipes, and Maria Tatar. Students will each choose one individual work for a final project.

Examinations and Assignments:
Two short papers of 4-5 pages each, and a final research project of 15-20 pages. One class presentation. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This course contributes to the fulfillment of the Theory & Literary Forms concentration of the English major and fulfills the Research Option requirement for honors thesis writers in English. |
