Healers, Quacks and Mystics: Alternative Medicine in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century America
AMST 225
Spring 2012
Section: 01
Crosslisting: HIST 284, SISP 224

This history of Complementary and Alternative Medicine has been reinvigorated by recent medical studies that report as many as 40 percent of Americans visit or purchase services and products provided by alternative practitioners of medicine. Situating this phenomenon historically, this course will not only explore how holistic healing systems survived and prospered over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth century, but also will analyze the way alternative approaches to healing gave voice to larger social, cultural and political debates in the United States.
