Environmental Justice & Sustainability: Challenges for Local to Global Environmental Governance

ENVS 255
Spring 2013
Section: 01
Certificates: Environmental Studies

This course engages environment and development problems, community responses, and policy debates regarding sustainability and "environmental justice" (EJ) issues--i.e., the way the nexus of culture, class, equity and spatial concerns (re)shape environmental problems and policies. The course presents empirical evidence on distributions of environmental quality and health, enforcement of regulations, access to resources to respond to local to global problems, and the broader political economy of decision-making around environment, health and sustainability domains. The course further explores and critically analyzes philosophies, frameworks, and strategies underlying social movements working explicitly on environment, sustainability and justice, broadly defined, in the United States and globally.
