The word "screening" is a double entendre. On the one hand, it simply refers to the fact that we will examine representation of Japanese modernity through the visual medium of film. But more important, we will screen (problematizing/criticizing) the more orthodox understanding of Japanese modernity. Throughout the semester, we will discuss the relationship between the dominant historical narratives and their filmic representations, how these films often subvert these existing narratives. |
