In this interdisciplinary studio course, we make work that traverses traditional disciplinary boundaries in order to develop a methodology that prioritizes questions of context, material, and theme. Building on the history of experimental and avant-garde practices of the 20th and 21st centuries, work in this course may take the form of installations, performances, videos, texts, participatory and collaborative projects, site- and context-specific works, and other as-yet undefined forms. Our work will not be defined by adherence to any specific discipline or genre. Rather, students will be prompted to develop a series of projects that use specified sets of materials and methods to explore defined thematic questions. Each work will contend with its social context and location in public or private space (i.e. gallery, street, museum, storefront, home). In this way, the course serves as a springboard for each student to develop a relationship to contemporary interdisciplinary practice as well as an opportunity to explore, collectively and individually, pivotal theoretical frameworks that have shaped the field, from deconstruction to phenomenology, institutional critique to decolonial theory. Readings, visits to museums, and technical demos (audiovisual recording, installation tools, woodshop equipment, etc.) will provide a theoretical and practical basis for work. Successful completion of the course will provide students with a solid foundation for experimentation in the expanded field of contemporary artistic practice. Course is open to all students. Preference given to students who have taken ARST131 or ARST235 or ARST238 or ARST239 or ARST245 or ARST 251 or ARST286 or other course in a related discipline.
