This course surveys the painting and sculpture of black American artists. Beginning with Duncanson, Bannister, and Tanner, the course then focuses on the art of the Harlem Renaissance and the intellectual ideal of the New Negro. The role of the WPA and the art of Jacob Lawrence are followed by a section on the impact of the Civil Rights Movement on the visual arts and the art of Bearden.
