This course surveys painting and other work by African-American artists of the late nineteenth and twentieth century, and then focuses on contemporary African artists and artists of the African diaspora. What was unique or distinctive about nineteenth-century American painting by Black artists? Next, we focus on the art of Henry O. Tanner, before turning our attention to the art of the Harlem Renaissance and the intellectual ideal of the New Negro. A section on the impact of the Civil Rights Movement on the visual arts and the art of Bearden leads us to consider independent sub-Saharan Africa. As artists today become increasingly trans-cultural, the art of the African diaspora takes on a new cultural meaning. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
There will be a required class trip to New York City to visit museums. This trip will be on a Saturday. Transportation and museum admission will be provided by the University.
