This course introduces the history and art of West Africa from the late first millenium AD to the beginning of the colonial period. The course focuses on a series of art works and architectural monuments, to illustrate important historical developments. These works include the 14th-century mosque in Jenné and a portrait bust of the Queen Mother from Benin, enabling us to investigate the spread of Islam, or the role of women in the Benin kingdom. Other topics will include trans-Saharan commerce, and the integration of West Africa into 16th-century globalized commerce.
