This course is an investigation of Japanese narrative scrolls of the 12th to 14th centuries. These scrolls are a specialized form of painting that utilizes a variety of almost cinematographic techniques to transcend the fixed temporal and spatial viewpoint characteristic of most Asian and almost all Western art. The scrolls will be studied technically as a highly evolved form of narrative art and culturally in relationship to the rich heritage of medieval Japanese literature, history, and religion. |
