This course is about the world we live in, but described on an immense
scale: from planets to stars, galaxies and the universe as a whole.
It is hoped that by its conclusion you will have a sense of
where we are in the universe and how we got here. Thus, the early
part of the course will involve basic concepts and physical principles
that are used to understand astronomical observations. We will
then examine what we know about the universe at progressively
larger scales: beginning with the solar system, then
stars in our Galaxy, and finally, galaxies and the expansion of the
universe. |

Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
This is a general education course for students not intending to major in science. Although the majority of the course will be qualitative, a good knowledge of high-school-level mathematics (algebra and trigonometry) is expected. Some of the discussion sections will meet at night and make use of the telescopes at Van Vleck Observatory. |
