Cell Biology of Aging and Disease

People are living longer, especially in developed countries, and the elderly are now a large and growing proportion of the population. The process of aging and the medical needs of the elderly are therefore receiving increased attention. This course will deal with research on the cellular basis of aging and will include topics such as regulated cell death, cellular senescence and telomeres, immortalization and cancer, molecular alterations, genes and aging, and the impact of caloric restriction on longevity. Some attention will also be paid to diseases associated with aging such as osteoporosis and Alzheimer's Disease.
