Junior Government Tutorial: Law Like Love

In this tutorial we will learn about classical and critical approaches (critical race theory, feminist, and queer theoretical approaches) to law. We will discuss what it means to think of law as a social construct, and what it means to think of social phenomena as legal constructs. We will examine the place of courts in American democracy, and how that role has changed over time.

Students will read theory, discuss landmark Supreme Court cases, and engage in policy debates.

Week 1- Law as a social construct: Classical and critical approaches (critical race theory, feminist, and queer theoretical approaches) to law
Weeks 2- Social phenomena as legal constructs: What is speech?
Week 3- Social phenomena as legal constructs: What is religion? What is commerce?
Week 4: Rethinking judicial power
Week 5: Free and fair courts
Week 6: Law and justice
