DANC 309
Fall 2008
Section: 01
This course may be repeated for credit.

This course stresses advanced modern dance technique. From a foundation of basic movement principles applicable to all movement techniques and styles, this course will focus on the performance of complex dance movement sequences, emphasizing rhythmic accuracy, continuity, technical mastery, and performance quality. Friday's class taught by different visiting artists.

Essential Capabilities: Interpretation
This course is based on the practice of interpreting and performing movement. Moreover, this course emphasizes that interpretation requires practice. Through repeated practice the students' ability to understand, evaluate, contextualize and perform material deepens as they become more perceptive and attuned to subtleties in time, space, force, sources and contexts of the movement.
Designing, creating, realizing: Performance in the arts is neither treated as rote repetition, nor as the objective accomplishment of task. Performance combines the variable art of interpretation with the creative ability to actualize that interpretation in movement. Through its emphasis on the practice of performance, Modern Dance Technique combines the categories of "interpretation" with "designing, creating, realizing." Students will undertake readings from multiple disciplines and complete short written and movement assignments.
