This lecture course deals with eleven novels. It explores changes in American fiction, the concerns and attitudes after World War II. The first half of the course addresses the hegemony of certain forms and issues in novels written primarily by white male authors between 1945 and 1960. The second half is devoted to diverse novels that represent and reflect on some of the literary and social forces that have led to the heterogeneity of contemporary fiction.
