Crosslisting:
MDST 207 |
Course Cluster: Christianity Studies |
In this course, we will read selections from THE CANTERBURY TALES and some of Chuacer's lesser-known poems--THE BOOK OF THE DUCHESS, THE HOUSE OF FAME, and THE PARLIAMENT OF FOWLS. We will also read selections from some works by Chaucer's sources and contemporaries, as well as documentary sources from 14th-century England. Some of the topics we will consider are: the various genres of Chaucer's poetry (dream-vision, epic, satire), the ideology of chivalry and medieval romance, Chaucer's reinvention of the Classical world, 14th-century historiography, and medieval views of gender and sexuality. All readings will be in Middle English, so we will read slowly and carefully, with attention to the language. |
