This course is a study of the relation between dissensual political and social movements--queer, communist, feminist, anarchist, African American nationalist, and beat--and poetry written in and about New York City during the mid-20th century.

Some previous acquaintance with poetry or American history is recommended. Punctual and regular attendance. Willing and ready participation in classroom discussion. This course meets the English Department's Research Option requirement for Senior thesis writers.
