This introductory course, taught in English, investigates major silent and sound films and contextualizes them, their production, and the subjects they treat within a historical, cultural, and political framework. We will trace the intersection among politics, ideology, and Italian cinema, from its Golden Age of silents through fascism, neorealism, and beyond. Featured filmmakers include Pastrone, Rossellini, De Sica, Fellini, Bertolucci, Antonioni, Wertmuller, Cavani, Pasolini, the Taviani Brothers, and others. Additional material includes readings in film theory and criticism, Italian history, literary sources, screenplays, and interivews. |

Examinations and Assignments:
Students will participate in weekly Moodle discussions, prepare discussion questions, and write two papers during the course of the semester. A final examination is anticipated. Brief, "pop" quizzes may be administered; they may or may not figure into students' grades. In small groups, students will make presentations during class time. If an Italian film is part of the Film Series, students will be required to attend. |
Additional Requirements and/or Comments:
STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND A WEEKLY SCREENING OF FILMS SO AS TO VIEW THE FILMS BEFORE MONDAY'S CLASS MEETING. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO SEE THE FILMS BEFORE THE MONDAY CLASS.
THERE WILL BE TWO SCREENINGS: 1) ON THURSDAYS, FROM 7-10 PM AND 2) SUNDAYS 7-10 PM. STUDENTS MUST BE ABLE TO ATTEND ONE OF THESE SCREENINGS IN ORDER TO ENROLL IN THE COURSE.
STUDENTS WHO HAVE TAKEN ANY LEVEL ITALIAN COURSE WILL BE GIVEN PREFERENCE FOR ENROLLMENT.
Film screenings are scheduled for three-hours, 7-10 pm. Only two or three films will last the duration of three hours, but students should keep the full three hours cleared in their schedule. There will be no other screening opportunity.
There are no prerequisites for this course. Formal film analysis is something we will work on throughout the semester. At the beginning of the semester, some students may have more familiarity with formal analysis than others. At the same time, other students may have greater familiarity with Italian cinema, history, and society. By the conclusion of the course, all students will have greater understanding of film analysis in the context of Italian society and the Italian film industry.
This course is appropriate for first-year students.
This course is acceptable as an elective for the FILM major. |
