Discussion and written work will be based on current or very recent events and developments in Germany. Possible topics will be unification; the new Europe; multiculturalism; environmental issues; a literary work. In 2006 the main focus will be on contemporary films. The course will provide extensive practice in speaking and writing, using structured conversation, debates, formal vocabulary-building, analysis of different types of texts--journalistic, rhetorical, poetic, visual, scholarly, etc.--and writing assignments in different genres.
