20th-Century United States History

HIST 240
Spring 2015 not offered
Crosslisting: AMST 230
Certificates: Civic Engagement, The Study of Education

This course explores the history of the United States from the late 19th century through recent years. We will cover many areas of modern American history, including the economy, social relations, art and popular culture, politics and policy, and wars both hot and cold. We will focus our attention on four broad periods of change: the Progressive Era, the Depression and New Deal Era, the social transformations of the post-WWII years, including the tumultuous 1960s, and the resurgence of conservatism since the 1970s. Reading a mix of primary and secondary sources, we will trace such threads as the fate of liberalism, the changing dynamics of race, class, and gender, and the role of government in Americans' lives. We will also pay special attention to the growth of environmental politics and policy, and the place of science and technology in the economy, governance, and everyday life.
